The Fish River Canyon hiking trail is different from other trails in Africa and another great place to explore on a Southern Namibia tour. This is the world's second largest canyon, surpassed in size only by the well-known Grand Canyon in Colorado. The canyon is about 180 km in length, running south from Seeheim to the Orange River, which creates the border between South Africa and Namibia. The hiking trail stretches 90 km along this canyon, starting from the viewing site at Hobas and ending at the hot water spa resort of Ai-Ais.
In the mid nineteenth century the Nama people were the original inhabitants of the areas around the Orange River in northern South Africa and Southern Namibia. The Nama followed their leader, Jan Jonker Afrikaner to the region of the present day Windhoek. Prior to their move close to the Orange River the Nama used to live in Namaqualand and were called Hottentots. However, they could not stay long in their homeland because of the aggression of European farmers who drove them towards the north. Here they fought many wars with the inhabitants of the north - the Herero people. Eventually, the warring groups were relocated to reserves by the German government.
The Nama are similar to the Bushmen (San) in many ways. They have the same linguistic roots, light skin and features, and small, delicate frames. The Nama also share a language with the Damara people.
